Patios, paths and paving
Indian sandstone, slate and reclaimed stone laid on a proper base, with the falls set so water leaves the house.

Most failed patios failed underneath. Too thin a sub base, no fall, or slabs spot bedded on five dabs of mortar. Every patio here goes down on a full bed over a compacted base, with the falls run away from the building and the pointing finished to match the stone.
Front paths, side passages and courtyards get the same treatment. So do the awkward ones, the sloping plot that needs the patio held by a wall before a single slab is laid.
